Important information about Cafergot



Do not use the combination of caffeine and ergotamine if you are currently breastfeeding or are pregnant. Cafergot is FDA pregnancy category X. This drug has been reported to cause serious birth defects and must never be used by women that are pregnant or breastfeeding. Additionally, this drug can make your birth control pills less effective, which may result in a pregnancy unless you use some other reliable method of contraception. Please tall to your health care provider and discuss the contraception methods you are currently using to make sure they are reliable enough. If you are using just one method of birth protection, your doctor may need you to use another one. If you get pregnant even though you did everything possible to avoid it, stop taking Cafergot and contact your doctor right away to learn about the options you have. Do not give this drug to other people, especially pregnant women that can suffer serious consequences of this kind of treatment. Tell your health care provider if you have any health problems that may potentially interfere with the success of the treatment. The following medical conditions are supposed to be reported, as they can alter the effects of Cafergot and affect your treatment: angina, uncontrolled high blood pressure, history of a heart attack or stroke, blood circulation problems, coronary artery disease, severe liver or kidney disease, serious infection, and heart disease. If you have any other medical problems that you think are important to mention – make sure to do that as well for your doctor to have the full picture. If you are taking any medications that may potentially interfere with Cafergot – let your doctor know about them. The following drugs have been reported to interact with Cafergot: antibiotics, heart or blood pressure medications, antidepressants, and medicines to treat HIV or AIDS. Any herbal supplements or vitamins you are using are also important to mention. If you are using several drugs simultaneously, it’s recommended to make a list of them and demonstrate to your doctor during the visit. This will help your health care provider to prescribe the lowest most efficient dose of Cafergot that you will benefit from. Grapefruit and products containing grapefruit may interact with the effectiveness of Cafergot. Make sure you exclude these products from your diet after discussing it with your health care provider. You may ask your health care provider any questions you have got, especially if you did not understand the instructions clearly. In that case you can also read the label of your medicine or talk to your pharmacist about any concerns you have. Don’t be shy to ask the same question several times – as the success of your treatment and your wellbeing will depend on how clear you understood the instructions. Your health care provider is supposed to know if you have any medical conditions that may affect your treatment and intensify side effect. The following ones are impotent to mention before you start the treatment: diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, hysterectomy, smoking, excessive weight, or breathing problems.
